Without immigration the city was going down the tubes. The people who have come to live here have increased our population, having increased our opportunity of employment, having increased revenues for tax collection and using very little services. They are not big users of services, ’cause they are really like “just want to work and be left alone.” They have been a great addition to our city.
I recognized that their (Chinese Philadelphians) contributions to the city are legendary as far as being good citizens, being good merchants and being good parents, and raising their kids appropriately and in a very educationally important way, as far as making their children understand that if they don’t do well in the schools, if they don’t do well in the streets, if they don’t do well in life, they are disrespecting their parents… I think that kind of discipline is really important to every kid. I think that is something we should emulate from the Chinese community and other Asian groups. I am happy that they are here. I am happy that they are Philadelphians. I want them to tell the folks in their home countries that Philadelphia is a great place to be. If they want to move, they want to relocate, they should think about coming to Philadelphia, ’cause we are going to have the services and the respect and show them the dignity and the respect that they deserve.
